Chapter 1
Zorgar! Take him down!" Targan yelled across the steppe, leaping out of the way of the charging bison, which was barreling towards him from the edge of the herd.
His own spear, thrown at too steep an angle, had struck the leader in the forehead but hadn't pierced through. Instead, it only enraged the beast further, scraping its skin and ricocheting off to the side.
Today’s hunt had gone wrong from the very start. First, the beaters messed up, startling the herd before they had come close enough to the watering hole. As a result, the bison ran not along the shore but past the ambush and further towards the hills. Only Zorgar and Turkie were there—both very young orcs, taking part in a bison hunt for the first time. They had been brought along to observe, learn, and help carry the catch.
They might have still managed to steer the herd towards the ambush, but Targan, who had assumed the role of leader after all the adult warriors of the tribe had left for a raid, couldn't hold back and charged ahead. After his throw, the enraged and bewildered leader of the herd charged straight at the young orcs.
Turkie dashed to the side.
"Zorgar! Take him down!"
Zorgar, the youngest in the orc hunting party, stood frozen with terror, his eyes wide as he raised his spear defensively. He braced himself for the impact of the entire herd. He was knocked down, trampled, and overwhelmed.
